Assistant Principal Institute
Assistant Principal Institute

Novice assistant principals participate in Assistant Principal Induction which sets aside time from August to March in order to acclimate new APs to the role.  Each session assists in the acclimation process by providing information on JCS policies, procedures, and supporting new leaders in their transition.  Shortly after the hiring process is complete, novice APs receive an emailed schedule.  AP Mentors will be matched after attending the orientation, scheduled for August 19, 2016 from 8:30 - 10:30 AM in the West Campus Training Center.

Johnston County Schools, and specifically Innovation & Strategic Development (ISD), recognizes the need to build strong instructional leaders even after they have been hired in leadership positions. Geared to both new and veteran APs, Assistant Principal Institute (API) allows school administrators to continue growing by building capacity to lead innovative change.

Because we know continued professional learning is critical for school administrators in order to stay energized and innovative, various topics are included based on the interest and need of school leaders. Assistant principals can elect to enroll in as many sessions as they desire. Topics such as Digital Learning Leadership, Legal Leadership, Crucial Conversations, Crucial Accountability, Understanding Poverty, Facilitative Leadership, Preparing for the Principalship, and Data Literacy have been offered over the last few years.

Johnston County Schools understands the impact strong instructional leadership has on overall student achievement. Additionally, district leadership acknowledges the potential for increased recruitment opportunities and retention when novice administrators receive effective and personalized support. As such, the assistant principal mentoring program matches new assistant principals (those in their first two years) with a trained veteran assistant principal mentor. Periodic check-ins take place throughout the year, as well as district-scheduled opportunities for collaboration.

Through collegial networking and involvement in enrichment activities, those who attend API will gain knowledge and confidence in their role as a school leader.  It is our hope that participants leave each session with a renewed spirit of motivation and commitment to the profession.

Beginning August 1, 2016, all courses will appear in the My Learning Plan district catalog. Please enroll if you wish to attend.
